Satoru Iwata was the global president and CEO of Nintendo and a gifted programmer who played a key role in the creation of many of the world’s best-known games. He led the production of innovative platforms such as the Nintendo DS and the Wii, and laid the groundwork for the development of the wildly successful Pokémon Go game and the Nintendo Switch. Known for his analytical and imaginative mind, but even more for his humility and people-first approach to leadership, Satoru Iwata was beloved by game fans and developers worldwide. In this motivational collection, Satoru Iwata addresses diverse subjects such as locating bottlenecks, how success breeds resistance to change, and why programmers should never say no. Drawn from the “Iwata Asks” series of interviews with key contributors to Nintendo games and hardware, and featuring conversations with renowned Mario franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto and creator of EarthBound Shigesato Itoi, Ask Iwata offers game fans and business leaders an insight into the leadership, development, and design philosophies of one of the most beloved figures in gaming history.

This book is a sort of cobbled together autobiography of Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's former CEO from 2002 until his death in 2015. The book is made up primarily of interviews posted on the Hobonichi website, and some 'Iwata Asks' interviews from Nintendo's website. This format makes the book seem almost like a journal, with Iwata describing events that happened in his life and how he approached different situations. Each entry is about a page long, and they are organized into chapters that collect about seven to ten entries that are all loosely about a common theme. The end of each chapter also has a collection of shorter quotes from Iwata. This is a unique format, and in some ways I prefer it to a traditional autobiography. This book was more a collection of stories and advice from Iwata, instead of him trying to tell a cohesive story about his own life. The reader still gets an idea of what kind of person Iwata was, and what factors shaped his personality and business philosophies, but it also feels more instructional. You get the feeling that Iwata would want you to learn from his experiences; that he wouldn't want to waste time just telling you about his own life simply because he's an interesting person. It makes sense to me that someone with this mindset was able to accomplish so much. RIP to a pioneer of the industry, and respected leader.
